PAINT & PINTURA
Optimism to prevail
Clipping
C
ontinuing to grow at the slow rates that followed the economic crisis in the first half of 2009 for the
remaining months of the year is out of the question among companies in the paint and coatings industry.
This is because they have spared no effort to try and reach the same growth rate as they did in 2008, which
had by the way not been seen for many years.
The paint industry expects to substantially resume that growth pace over the months to come, and that
there will be a major improvement in the country’s economy. Naturally, that optimism reflects not only
the consumption levels being back to normal from suppliers of raw materials to end consumers, but also the efforts
that such suppliers have been making towards providing customers with products that exceed their requirements,
featuring high-quality technological innovations combined with care for the environment, health and safety, while
providing great value for money.
What is more, the industry has survived, as has the entire Brazilian market, the “financial hurricane” that started in
the last quarter of 2008, and promises to reach (or substantially reach) the growth targets that it assigned itself for
this year.
It seems that the confidence crisis has been overcome. Now it’s time that all members of the supply chain got their
plans back out of the drawer and picked up where they left off. It’s time to show that optimism prevails and brighter
days are approaching.

Epoxy Resins – Environmentally correct quality
Epoxy copolymers are the latest materials to pro-
vide such specific properties as high gloss, high
scratch resistance, fast curing as appropriate for
each application and others, thanks to functional
groups that work together. The acrylated epoxy
resins technology has been developed very fast (by
an average of 15 percent per year over the past five
years) by virtue of ever stricter coating film quality,
curing speed and environmental requirements.
Reichhold, for example, has been constantly
working to develop and improve technologies for
epoxy systems. “Today, major launches and develo-
pments have been seeking to reduce VOCs, such as
curing agents that enable the formulation water-
based epoxy coatings with the same performance
as epoxy systems based on organic solvents or even
better,” says André Luiz de Oliveira, coatings ma-
rket development analyst for Reichhold.
Reichhold Global markets a wide range of products
for epoxy systems under the Epotuf brand. What
sets the Epotuf product line apart, according to
Oliveria, are the unique properties that the Epotuf
products impart to the coatings formulated by the
company’s customers, such as the low VOC con-
