PAINT & PINTURA
development group.
The company already has an expansion plan for its
plant where that line of urethane thickeners is produ-
ced, which is to be implemented this year in pursuit of a
larger industry scale. “The expansion works will com-
mence early in the second half of 2011. In fact, we will
try to expand not only the production area, but also our
sales team and the company’s entire structure, as we
are feeling the need for more space at our plant located
in Criciúma, State of Santa Catarina, and seeking to
meet the production demands from our customers. Upon
completion of the expansion works, our capacity will
reach 1,500 tons per month,” says Roberta Guedes, sales
coordinator at Khemeia.
Besides that thickener, Khemeia also supplies customers
with such additives as rheology modifiers, acrylic thi-
ckeners, hybrid acrylic-urethane and straight urethane
modifiers, dispersants for both water- and solvent-based
systems, defoamers, wetting and coalescing agent,
among others, always using cutting-edge technology and
aiming to meet the needs of its customers. “We’ve recen-
tly developed an acrylic dispersant that is still on trial,
but is already showing great results, including when
compared to our existing dispersants. In addition, the
company will participate in the Abrafati trade show for
the first time by the name of Khemeia, bringing along
our entire product range,” says Guedes.
Raw Materials - Innovation in emulsions
The Business Unit Emulsions, headquartered in Brazil,
São Paulo, has operations and manufacturing facili-
ties in 14 countries, relying on innovative technolo-
gies for emulsions designed for paints and coatings,
construction, adhesives, textile, leather and paper
that add value to the end products of several industry
segments. “We are present in the emerging countries
with five plants in Latin America, three in Africa and
six in Asia. Clariant has a long-standing tradition in
this market: with the brand Mowilith®, we have been
developing innovation in emulsions for almost 100
years,” says Sven Schultheis, director and global head
of Clariant’s Emulsions Business Unit.
Clariant Business Unit Emulsions goods and services
are based on chemical specialties that play crucial
roles in its customers’ processing and manufacturing
processes, thus resulting in properties that add value
to their end products.
Clariant is currently organized into ten Business Units:
Additives; Detergents & Intermediates; Emulsions; Indus-
trial & Consumer Specialties; Leather Services; Masterba-
tches; Oil & Mining Services; Paper Specialties; Pigments;
and Textile Chemicals Seven of those units are based in
Switzerland, one in Singapore, one in the United States,
and the tenth one —BU Emulsions— in Brazil. Clariant is
present on the five continents, employing 16,200 people.
Headquartered in Muttenz, Switzerland, it generated
sales of CHF 7.1 billion in 2010.
By developing great, innovative products, Clariant aims
to stimulate and spread environmentally friendlier
emulsion technologies for the paint market. “The emul-
sions used in paints today are water-based, which is a
major breakthrough as it is for the industry. The trend,
however, is towards extending this technology to other
applications, such as wood and metal, where solvent-ba-
sed products are still used. There’s a world trend towards
reducing the amount of solvents in chemical applica-
tions,” says Pablo Cadavid, Manager of the BU Emulsions
in Brazil and Global Product Manager.
Industry in the Spotlight - Transcor invests in Rio
de Janeiro plant
Transcor is expanding its site located in the industrial
district of Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. When the com-
pany purchased the site from BASF in 2007, it had a
built-up area of 16,300 square meters, and now, with an
addition of 2,400 square meters, the site has a total area
of 18,700 square meters. “This expansion consists of a
new pigment dispersions unit comprising a laboratory,
the plant and logistics,” says Transcor’s manufacturing
director Julio Delboni.
The company has put this investment plan into action in
Rio de Janeiro due to the conveniences of the site, as well
as the impossibility of expanding Transcor’s Diadema
plant, São Paulo, as it has reached the top of its capacity.
Upon completion of the expansion, Transcor will start
producing on the Rio de Janeiro site all of the concen-
trates for water-based decorative paints under the
brands Transperse, Transflex and Transnyl. “As for new
products, universal concentrates will be produced for
decorative paints, of which Transtrend and Transmix
are for tinting machines, while Transdeco is for in-
-plant use,” Delboni points out, adding that the Trans-
trend products are already on the market. “However,
the Transmix and Transdeco brands will be available by
September this year.”
The plant started up in May 2011, and its capacity is
planned to reach 1,200 tons per year. “With this capa-
city increase, we will be able to supply our customers
more rapidly, particularly in export markets, while
adding 20 percent to our business, as we estimate for
next year. In addition, we consider it an environmen-
tally correct plant because it will not generate any sort
of effluent or release any other pollutant into the envi-
ronment,” the manufacturing director completes.
