be summed up as easy dispersion, improved performance in water-based
systems, high color strength, sustainable raw materials and a high de-
gree of purity, among others. And carbon black manufacturers have been
making major technological advances to meet these requirements.
Printing Inks – New Formulations
The Rule of Sustainability
Manufacturers have invariably been developing inks based on raw mate-
rials from renewable sources. Offset printing inks demonstrate the state
of the art from books and magazines to packaging materials —especially
food-contact packaging.
A wide variety of inks involving outstanding technologies are available
for offset printing. Premiata, for example, is introducing the Green-Tech
line of inks formulated with raw materials from renewable sources.
According to assistant technician Juliana Penhorate, these inks deliver
great performance in printing machines, especially in terms of roll
transfer, water-and-ink balance and cutbacks. “They can also be used in
machines with reverse printing and with fountain solutions that reduce
or eliminate the use of isopropyl alcohol. Other important features of
these inks include the fact they are formulated with low-odor raw mate-
rials, can be used in indirect food-contact packaging materials and meet
the requirements of national and international regulations. These inks
are compliant with the standard ABNT NBR NM-ISO 12647-2,” Juliana
says.
Cromos competes with two lines: UV HI Cure, and Free Pack Low Migra-
tion. “The former has shown great performance in machines with HUV
curing systems. Excellent printability and superior gloss have become its
main points of difference. Applicability on various substrates comple-
ments the main features of that ink, including where new technologies
are used, such as synthetic paper. The Free Pack Low Migration line,
for its part, which is designed for food-contact packaging applications,
meets the most stringent applicable standards for heavy metals and low
migration,” says Cronos’ technical support supervisor Marcos Jesus, who
adds that the inks from this line meet the requirements of the Nestlé
standard and are the only products of their kind to be domestically pro-
duced and certified by a specific international agency.
Pigment Dispersions - From Olinda to São Paulo
The history of Sintequímica began in 1954 in the city of Olinda, Pernam-
buco, where there is an important textile industry park that moti-
vated its choice of that location to start doing business. With a view to
expanding its customer base, the company soon set up facilities in São
Paulo, where it succeeded in supplying customers from its local inven-
tory and providing technical and sales support in connection with its
products. However, it was not before the late 1990’s that the company
expanded its business to supply pigment
dispersions to the paint industry.
Sintequímica currently concentrates all of
its production in the Caieiras site, São Pau-
lo, where it has a very high capacity. “We
have shut down our Olinda site, and now
we’re in São Paulo to stay. And given our
structure, I believe that we have the largest
pigment grinding capacity for water-based
systems in Latin America, as we own 17
grinders. We have just built up an addi-
tional plant to receive the entire structure
of the Olinda site and expand our capacity,”
says Marcelo Amaral Leite de Macedo, sales
director at Sintequímica.
On the verge of attaining 60 years of exis-
tence, Sintequímica is already celebrating
the feats of a new phase. “We have already
completed some expansion projects, but
