PAINT & PINTURA
tors for three days in September
2008 at the Yellow Pavilion of
Expo Center Norte, in São Paulo.
More than 50 suppliers to the
paint and adhesive industries
showcased their solutions, focu-
sing on technologies designed for
productivity and durability, while
respecting the environment. Si-
multaneously with the exhibition,
Latincoat & Adhesives Latin Ame-
rica 2008 had 550 professionals
participating in the congress.
Biocides - Multifunctional and
efficient
Used in a wide variety of indus-
try segments, biocides have been
keeping pace with the economic
upswing, and, specifically in the
paint industry, these products have
benefitted from the substantially
increased activity in building and
construction brought about by the
tax cuts extended to the industry,
as well as the positive period in
other areas, such as ship building,
automotive, household sanitation
products, and others. “The expected
growth for 2010 is largely linked
with the increased consumption of
decorative paints and automotive
coatings. As more funds are availa-
ble for housing projects and gover-
nment incentivizes home building,
with programs like “Minha Casa,
Minha Vida,” or “My Home, My
Life,” the real estate market is boos-
ted, and the paint industry grows
accordingly,” says Eduardo Oliva,
business development manager for
UniAmerica.
In such a positive scenario, there
has been a considerable increa-
se in the demand for paints and
coatings, around 10 to 20 percent
for the first half of this year, while
the expectations for the second
half are even more optimistic. And
this reflects in the biocides market.
In addition, a rise in demand is
generated by changes in coatings
formulations, as solvents are repla-
ced with water.
The paint industry is expected
to grow approximately 8 percent
in 2010. This represents a major
difference from the expectations
which prevailed in late 2009 for
the year 2010. Back then, the
industry was expected to gain no
more than 3.4 percent.
The search for new developments
has been a constant in this market,
especially concerning the services
involved in the supply of biocides,
as well as the evolution in technolo-
gies. “We believe that the players in
this market have opened their eyes
and now fully understand that the
supply of some molecules must be
always come along with technical
support, so that a safe and reliable
use can be ensured, as preservation
problems usually arise later on, and
often reach end users. The resulting
negative publicity is fatal to the
companies concerned, especially
small-to-mid-sized businesses,” says
Alécio Predomo Junior, technical
manager at Brenntag.
The biocides market has focused on
performance-enhancing products
with a view to further improving
the end products where biocides
will be used. It is also important to
remark that the creation of envi-
ronmentally friendly, low-toxicity
products has become a key factor in
this industry.
Emulsions - Innovative
sustainability allies
Emulsions play their role in the
coating film formation, imparting
adhesion, protection and durability
to the end product. In addition, the
emulsion market also seeks to deve-
lop low-VOC products that produce
less and less waste.
They play a key role in coatings
formulations, which is to involve all
of the non-volatile material and fix
it, forming the film on the coated
surface and providing it with such
properties as chemical and mecha-
nical strength, abrasion resistance,
weathering resistance, washability,
touchability, gloss, hardness or
softness, rigidity or flexibility, color
strength, adhesion and others.
Serving the main purpose of for-
ming an adhesive, stable film on
the substrate, emulsions also con-
tribute to process improvements,
such as rising cost-benefit ratios by
skipping a production process stage
while still delivering the appropria-
te performance. In addition, the
main characteristics of emulsions
are solids, viscosity, pH, particle size
and residual monomer rates.
Another important differentiation
of emulsions is that they can repla-
ce resins diluted in organic solvents
in several decorative paint and
industrial coatings applications,
using water as a primary solvent.
Fabiana Padilha, sales supervisor
at Isogama, says that emulsions for
styrene acrylic resins fix the fillers
and pigments in decorative coatin-
gs on the substrate, i.e. the wall.
“It is the resin emulsion that allows
the mineral components of paints
to stabilize, making the surface
water-resistant and contributing to
the color and gloss of the film for-
med on the surface. Emulsions for
acrylic thickeners are used in the
formulation of decorative paints
and textured coatings to improve
