New Developments to Shake
Up the Market in 2012
The March issue of the Paint & Pintura magazine brings you key information on the 4th Paint & Pintura Coatings Technology and
Management Forum for the Northeast Region, which will be held in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará on April 25 and 26, 2012 at Blue
Tree Premium, on Iracema Beach.
Another featured article is entitled “Impacts of FIFA World Cup and Olympics on the Paint Industry – Part II – Industrial Coatings.”
The economic upturn, the expansion of business and the preparations for those events have been having great effects on infras-
tructure, engineering and construction, turning Brazil into a real construction site and having positive repercussions on the entire
paint value chain. As result, major investments are already in progress in the country and will stick around for many years, ensu-
ring sustained growth in the industrial coatings market.
The following pages also contain articles on key raw materials for the paint and coatings industry, such is inorganic pigments,
emulsions and polyurethane resins. They are primarily focused on the constant search for new, environmentally friendly technolo-
gies, a theme which remains in a prominent position in the agenda of the Brazilian paint industry.
And the year 2012 has come along with great news. Sitivesp has signed an agreement with Abrafati to jointly organize Feitin-
tas 2012, which will take place from September 19 to 22, 2012 in São Paulo. As the main entities representing the paint industry
combine their efforts, the result will be a broader, more robust trade show. The trade show will bring together all major manu-
facturers of decorative paints and automotive refinish coatings, as well as suppliers of complementary products, related tools and
application equipment.
Another highlight of this issue is the creation of the Prolata Recycling Association. With an up-front investment of R$ 1 million
and the participation 15 steel packaging companies which are members of Abeaço, the purpose of the entity is to recycle steel pa-
ckaging materials after consumption in a space with capacity to receive 20 tons of empty containers per day, which will be sorted,
compressed and sent to steel companies, so that they can turn the material into new metal sheets for reuse. More initiatives like
this should be developed and put to action in all segments of the industry.
Change continues to take place in large corporations as well. Rhodia, for example, has appointed Antonio Leite to be the new
global director of Rhodia Coatis’ Solvents Business Unit. The M.Cassab Group has hired the executive Fernando Abrantes as chief
executive officer of its chemical business and will invest R$ 50 million to build its new Distribution Center in Cajamar, São Paulo.
Check out this issue for all that and more!
Enjoy!

Inorganic Pigments - Innovation Allows for Improved
Performance
Inorganic pigment suppliers take the opportunity created by the
current situation to seek and develop innovation with higher
quality and more sustainable technologies, always with the added
concern of providing technical advice for better results in paints.
Manufacturers of inorganic pigments continue to seek environ-
mentally friendlier alternatives. The international economic crisis
eventually brought about a sense of insecurity in corporations
and doubts about the availability of raw materials, particularly
metal-based ones. As a result, world prices have become volatile,
impacting pricing policies and putting an upward pressure on
prices. “We understand that this insecurity could be an oppor-
tunity for new business, causing the market to migrate from
metal-based inorganic pigments, particularly lead chromates, to
lead-free organic and inorganic pigments, whose sustainability
appeal has a significant relevance worldwide,” says Ulf Moebius,
BASF’s Coatings sales manager for South America, adding that
BASF is ready to meet market requirements with its product range
for this segment.
According to Colornet’s director Marcos Raicher, there was a
downturn in the demand for inorganic pigments in Brazil in the
