and ensuring proper leveling and good transfer from
the paint roller to the wall.
Used in several applications, ranging from foods to
coatings, thickeners also add to the hiding proper-
ties of paints during application, providing better
spreading properties, preventing sagging, allowing
easy handling and incorporation, reducing the
proliferation of microorganisms and making the dry
filmmore resistant to wet abrasion, thereby making
it stronger and more durable.
Today, the expansion of waterborne formulations
is increasing the use of these components in both
economy and premium paints, as the thickener
associates with the paint binder (emulsion or resins)
to provide appropriate rheological properties to
each different product. As a result, thickeners have
become indispensable to the formulation of paints,
as only by using them can good flow and viscosity
properties be achieved and problems like setting,
sagging and phase separation be prevented.
Thickeners also allow for differentiation and inno-
vation in the market, with the formulation of more distinguished, higher value-added
products, while improving the application properties of the end products, which is why
suppliers are always investing in innovation for the markets that they serve.
Paint Industry - New Horizons
Tintas Alessi, a company specializing in decorative paints, but also engaged in the
industrial and automotive coatings business, has good reasons to celebrate. “We
started our production with a small line of textured coatings and putties under the
Alessi brand. In 2008, we gained significant market scale and acquired a space for
our plant covering an area of 2,000 square meters, where we not only produce putties
and textured coatings, we have also expanded our product range to include finishing
lines,” says technical director Renato de Araújo.
After those achievements, Tintas Alesso started to grow rapidly. The year 2009 was
a milestone in the company’s history, as new products were added to its portfolio, its
plant was expanded and new equipment was purchased. “We’ve developed a great
product range strengthen our position in the marketplace with a comprehensive
color fan and both water and solvent-based products,” says business director Heitor
Leandro Alessi.
In 2010, the company introduced a new branding concept to the market, assigning
the Tintas Alessi brand to its premium paints, and Tintas Isabela to standard and
economy paints, while designing and launching its website (www.alessi.ind.br), which
provides information on its entire product range and contact information of its distri-
butors. It was also in that year that the company kicked off the process of adhering to
Abrafati’s Industry-Specific Quality Program, known in Portuguese by the initials PSQ.
Tintas Alessi began doing business in the state of Paraná, but the entire restructuring
and expansion of its plant have led it to extend to Santa Catarina and Rio Grande
do Sul, where it has dealerships. “Currently, the company is present only in the South
region, but we’re already working to expand our business to São Paulo and Minas
Gerais, and will get to Rio de Janeiro soon afterwards, which means that we’re expan-
ding our markets served in a gradual manner,” chief executive officer Paulo Rogério
Alessi points out.
Tintas Alessi has grown a lot over the past few years in terms of distribution and re-
presentatives. “We are in the middle of an expansion process, and the company chan-
ges all the time. We’ve invested R$ 1.5 million in our new facilities. Today, our plant
has a built-up area of 6,600 square meters, state-of-the-art equipment with installed
capacity of 2.3 million liters per month and 53 employees, as well as sales representa-
tives, distributors and an outsourced logistics team. Even though we producing only
one million liters per month, we are all set for further growth. Since we already have
the capacity, equipment and staff, all we need now is to make minor inventory and
shipment adjustments. We’re taking care of these details as our business grows,” Paulo
Alessi says.
In early 2012, the company made another significant investment of R$ 800,000 in
new facilities to expand its production of textured coatings.
