ers more closely and bring the best of its portfolio to the
region where they are located. “The Packaging Coatings
plant enables PPG to supply any kind of coating products,
including the latest technologies, to major markets in
South America, such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru,
Venezuela and Ecuador,” he says. With its large capacity,
the plant is set to supply any occasional demand from
other countries and regions.
As part of PPG Industries’ business in Latin America,
Brazil plays a key role in the company’s growth plans,
as PPG’s largest market share in the continent is in this
country, and this new plant stands out as our regional
headquarters. The company’s sales in Latin American
countries represent 7 percent of its global sales, or some-
thing in the neighborhood of US$ 1 billion.
It took 10 months to structure and implement the new
unit. The project was coordinated by a local engineer-
ing team, which received full support from the company’s
global engineering team, focusing the supply of high-
quality and high-reliability products, which are 100-per-
cent PPG-made. The cost of the undertaking is included
in the amounts being invested in this site, which amount
to around R$ 200 million. PPG employs 1,100 people in
Brazil, 700 of whom at the Sumaré complex, and expects
to hire another 70 workers for that plant.
Santa Cruz says that the company’s innovation processes
are steered according to consumer needs. “PPG develops
technologies that are unprecedented in the marketplace,
and the products from the new plant are in line with the
company’s philosophy. The plant supplies the new Innovel
line of inside and outside coatings, which provides sustain-
able solutions and is designed for food and beverage cans.
The PPG product range also includes performance coat-
ings with sustainability features, such as low or zero VOC
emissions. The multinational markets paints and coatings
with UV-curing technology, which averts solvent emis-
sions, as well as powder coatings and waterborne packag-
ing coating for aluminum spray and beverage cans.
PPG Industries’ new Packaging Coating plan has also
engaged in the production of coatings designed to meet
more demanding requirements, such as sulfur and acid
stain resistance, which are ideally-suited for a wide va-
riety of packaging contents, such as red fruit, tomatoes,
meats, fish and canned foods.
