Improving Expectations
This isaverydelicate time for theBrazilianeconomy.As the
first half has passed, it is important to look at the growth
indicatorsfortwoofthe industriesthathavethemostdirect
influence on the results of the paint and coatingsmarket.
Startingwithbuildingandconstruction,theNationalConstruc-
tion Index(Sinapi),publishedbythe IBGE(Brazilian Institute
ofGeographyandStatistics) inpartnershipwith theFederal
SavingsBank,showsanaccruedcostincreaseof3.68percent
forthefirsthalfof2014,which is lowerthantheresultforthe
sameperiodof lastyear(4.10%).
AveryinterestingpieceofinformationisthatcostsintheBrazi-
lianSoutheasthaverisenhigherthanintheotherregionsinthe
yeartodate.Constructioncosts increasedmoredramatically
in the region, by 5.01 percent, especially due to the results
inSãoPauloandRiodeJaneiro for thefirsthalfof theyear.
Accordingly,theresultfortheregionwasabovethenational
averageof3.68percent. It isalsoworthpointingoutthatthe
figuresforcityofSãoPauloarenearthoseforthestatesthat
experiencedthehighestincreasesinconstructioncostsforthe
sameperiod.SãoPaulo’saccruedcostincreaseof5.71percent
issubstantiallyabovethenationalaverageforthefirsthalf.
Alsoimportanttothepaintmarketistheautomotiveindustry.
Brazilianautomakersdisplayeda 13-percentdrop inproduc-
tionfortheperiodbetweenJanuaryandMarch,fallingbelow
expectations.Asa result, the industry isexpected to review
its forecasts for thisyear. Salesalsodecreasedconsiderably
by5.5percent.
TheNational Association ofMotor VehicleManufacturers
(knownforshortasAnfaveainPortuguese)projectsa1.4-per-
cent increase inproductionvolume for2014.However,compared
tothepreviousmonth,therewassomeimprovementinJuly,when
294,800vehiclesweresold, representingan 11.8-percent increase
overJune’s263,600units.Productionalso increasedto252,600for
themonthof July, up 17percent compared to June. Exportsalso
grew40.2percent.
Anfavea president LuizMoanYabiku Junior says rather positive
figureswillbecomingfromtheindustryinthesecondhalf,including
vehicleregistrations,productionandexports.“Therewillbemore
business days in the second half, and, historically speaking, our
performance isalwaysbetter inthisperiod. Inaddition,webelieve
thatthemeasuresannounced inthepastfewdayswilladdliquidity
totheBrazilianeconomyasawhole.”
Thenumberspoint toa strongermarket in the secondhalf,with
agreat chance thatwewillmakeup forwhatwas not achieved
earlierthisyear.

CarlosTeixeiraÁlvares isofficially leavingthepositionandtaking
aseatattheboard.Ithinkthemainchallengefacingnot justme,
but theentire industry, is to reclaim the leadingposition that
steelcansalwayshad inthepaint industry,possiblyengaging in
partnershipswithothercompanies inour industry,andmaybe
evenbeing the surviving company ina consolidationprocess.
