ABEAÇO ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 5TH STEEL PACKAGING AWARDS The Brazilian Steel Packaging Association (Abeaço for short) held on October 23, at Villa Bisutti Cardoso de Melo, São Paulo, the presentation of its 5th Steel Packaging Awards. Receiving the recognition were the best steel cans introduced in the past two years in seven categories: Innovation, Practicality, Design, TexturedPrint, Unique Application, Lids for Sundry Containers, andSustainability—the latter spanning the product’s entire life cycle. More than 40 cans had been entered altogether. Also awarded that same evening was the new report that best highlighted and re- presented the steel can industry in Brazil, and the journalist Lucélia Monfardini, edi- tor in charge of Paint & PinturaMagazine, was the winner in this category. According to Thais Fagury, president of Abeaço, the Steel Packaging Awards stress the hard work and dedication steel packaging manufacturers undertake in search of innovation, practicality and sus- tainability. “The initiative demonstrates that, despite the times of crisis, the steel packaging industry has refreshed and reinvented itself year after year,” Thais points out. PACKAGING MATERIALS - STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF PACKAGING UNDER NATIONAL POLICY FOR SOLID WASTE The Brazilian Steel Packaging Association, or Abeaço for short, brought together at the headquarters of the São Paulo State Industry Federation (FIESP) government and business leaders to discuss with the audience solutions that can reduce the waste produced by packaging materials by adjusting the industry to the require- ments of Brazil’s National Policy of Solid Waste (PNRS). Around 78 million tons of solid waste are generated each year inBrazil, while 70 per- cent of all municipalities have some kind of waste sorting policy in place. However, governmental cleaning services can barely handle half the generated waste. The result of improper disposal of products that could be recycled are damages to the environment and human health. Abeaço president Thais Fagury has intro- duced the case of Prolata, an industry as- sociation focused on the proper disposal of steel cans for recycling. Prolatawas the first reverse logistics managing entity to be recognized by the BrazilianMinistry of the Environment. While operating more than 30 redemption sites throughout the country, Prolata currentlymobilizes more than 50 recycling cooperatives. Since the founding of the association, more than 28,000 metric tons of steel has been collected and recycled. Our goal is to cre- ate conditions for the steel can recycling chain to fully form, engaging can makers, productmanufacturers, cooperatives, end consumers and the steel industry. Right now, 100 percent of the containers collec- ted by Prolata are recycled by one partner steel company. We are looking for more partners in the steel industry,” Thais says. SITIVESP ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF SITIVESP SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2019 In the 31st edition, the Sitivesp Supplier of the Year Awards will be presented to nine companies that won the vote from those responsible for procurement at member companies. The award presentation is taking place on November 28 during the Sitivesp Year-End Dinner Party. The vote count and announcement ce- remony was held at the headquarters of FIESP (São Paulo State Industry Fe- deration), in São Paulo, on October 16, when the ballot box was opened and the ballots were counted by the industry association’s team and members of its RawMaterials department, led by Patricia de Lucca. The total count was 42 votes cast by the October 7 deadline. The various supplier segments divided into eight categories: Additives, Fillers, Water-based Resins, Solvent-based Re- sins, Pigments, Solvents, Packaging Materials, and Chemical Distribution. For this year’s edition, a ninth category was introduced focusing on innovation and technology, which are a priority at Sitivesp and have been incorporate into a variety of initiatives.
