PAINT & PINTURA
Agnelo Editora, especially its events. “Joy and optimism.
These are the words. Optimism because we believe in the
market and will continue to invest and stimulate the in-
dustry, as it one of the most important sectors of Brazil’s
economy. We have tried to be more and more omnipresent
through the events that we hold across Brazil. We will
continue to invest in our regional forums, which have al-
ready benefitted around a thousand skilled professionals
in the industry on a geographically decentralized basis,
which is really important. We have also had the honor to
participate and set up the Brazilian flag at the European
Coatings Show, in Germany, where we represented our
nation’s paint industry. This is a further testament to our
belief in the market. We must also acknowledge the Bra-
zilian companies which took part in that grandiose trade
show. I think that this belief and courage of the entrepre-
neurs concerned to swim upstream are some of the factors
that make all the difference,” Barros Neto concluded.
The ceremony was hosted by sports journalist Nivaldo
Prieto and, for a special attraction, also featured a show
by famous singer Luiza Possi.
Silicas - Imparting Excellent Properties to
Paints
Silicas can be used in all kinds of coating materials, such
as decorative paints, industrial, automotive OEM and
refinish coatings, printing inks, furniture and maritime
coatings, and especially paints and coatings requiring
good thixotropy, anti-sag and leveling properties. The
roles they pay in the formulation of paints and coatings
range from the ability to modify rheology and promo-
te thixotropy to improving their adhesion to the primer
or basecoat. They also impart a soft touch to the finish,
adjust gloss, prevent sagging and enhance abrasion and
corrosion resistance. On account of these benefits, the
increased demand for silicas as paint additives is a direct
result of the manufacturers’ move towards more sustaina-
ble and enhanced-performance products.
Silicas will always be in demand in the Brazilian ma-
rket due to their outstanding performance, as well as
the constant evolution in the technologies involved. As a
result, there are good prospects for growth in the silica
market for 2013. “The challenges facing the Brazilian ma-
rket in precipitated silicas refer to competitiveness and,
accordingly, utilities like electric power and steam, infras-
tructure and taxes are recurring themes among manufac-
turers seeking to improve their performance by investing
in technology, automation and a lot of creativity,” says
Paulo Garbelotto, sales and marketing manager for Latin
America at the Solvay Group’s silica business.
Hydrocarbon Solvents - Solvents with
Improved Cost-Benefit Ratio
Performance-related points of difference and countless
advantages in the formulation of paints and coatin-
gs make it quite hard for hydrocarbon solvents to be
replaced in the paint industry. On the other hand, paint
manufacturers are eager to provide customers with envi-
ronmentally friendlier solutions.
The demand for hydrocarbon solvents has been keeping
pace with the growth in the paint industry, while the
latter has been following the international trend towar-
ds replacing solvent-based paints with low-VOC water-
-based systems. The truth is there is a movement toward
replacing hydrocarbon solvents with oxygenated solvents
or water-based or even solvent-free technologies, but
the balance between cost and benefit needed to enable
this replacement still hasn’t been found. For this reason,
hydrocarbon solvents are still more advantageous.
The prices for this kind of solvent is lower than those of
many oxygenated solvents, thus contributing to lowering
end formulation costs. In addition, their wide variety of
evaporation rates and broader distillation range provide
formulators with more options to adjust their formulae.
And this is all not to mention the great properties impar-
ted by hydrocarbon solvents, such as solubility, chemical
stability, compatibility with most resins, etc.
Therefore, hydrocarbon solvents are used in nearly all
kinds of coating materials, such as decorative paints,
automotive OEM and refinish, industrial and wood coa-
tings, printing inks, maritime paints and thinners, among
others. Aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents are used especially
in alkyd systems, and also as diluents in other systems in
order to reduce formulation costs, while aromatic solvents
can be considered active solvents in several kinds of mate-
rials, such as alkyd, polyester, epoxy and certain types of
acrylic systems.
