PAINT & PINTURA
By opening the Packaging Coatings plant, PPG bolsters
its slogan, “Bringing Innovation to the Surface”, which
alludes to the fact that the company specializes in various
types of surfaces. The company believes that, compared to
its competitors, it has the ability to highlight, protect and
value the surfaces of the most varied of products from its
customers, offering more variety than any other paint
and coatings company.
Abeaço Celebrates 10 Years of Existence
The Brazilian Steel Packaging Association, also known for
short in Portuguese as Abeaço, at a function held in São Paulo
on May 23, celebrated its 10-year anniversary as an advocate
of a sound, versatile and eco-friendly packaging product: the
steel can.
During the event, a special tribute was paid to Mr. Elio Ce-
pollina, who dedicated more than 70 years to the steel can
industry and provided a valuable contribution to the organi-
zation and growth of Abeaço, and to Mr. Aluisio Abdalla, for
the work done at the association over the past 10 years.
Abeaço also honored 16 steel packaging companies which
banked on the entity and took part in its organization: Silgan
White Cap do Brasil, Rimet, Metalgráfica Renner, Indústria
Reunidas Renda, Metalúrgica Prada, Metalgráfica Palmira,
Novalata Embalagens, Módulo Embalagens, Metalic, Meister,
Incoflandres, Metalgráfica Iguaçu, Companhia Siderúrgica
Nacional, Companhia Metalgráfica Paulista, Brasilata Emba-
lagens Metálicas, and Aro Embalagens Metálicas.
At the close of the event, Abeaço presented its guests with
the book “Lata de Aço – 100 Curiosidades da Embalagem que
Revolucionou o Processo de Armazenamento.” Organized into
seven chapters (History, Technology, Fine Dining, Sustain-
ability, Trivia, Culture, and Health), the book is one more
important source of knowledge.
DuPont and Dow Hold Sustainability Forum
On May 21, DuPont and Dow held a forum on sustainability
in the paint industry at the American Chamber of Com-
merce (AmCham), in São Paulo, covering decisive themes
for sustainable growth in the industry in the mid and long
term.
During the event, a presentation by two renowned experts
introduced business opportunities stemming from the
development of a sustainable and productive supply chain,
as well as trends in local and international standards and
regulations.
The first lecture, on the theme “Sustainability in the Value
Chain,” was delivered by DuPont’s global sustainability man-
ager Carina Alles, who talked about the creation of busi-
ness and value by sustainable products, as well as the guide
to the carbon footprint evaluation of architectural paints
through life cycle assessment “from the crib to the tomb”.
In this context, it is important to understand the environ-
mental impacts of the processes and products of this indus-
try. It is a hard task in that it calls for common comparison
criteria and a comprehensive approach, also known as Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA). Extensively used in European mar-
kets, an LCA consists of a comprehensive study of the im-
pacts of a given product or service on the environment, from
the extraction of raw materials to the end use, comprising
the production, distribution and consumption stages.
Right after the first presentation, Dow’s innovation and
technology manager Houshang Kheradmand lectured on
“International Trends Concerning New Standards and Regu-
lations in the Paint Industry.” He stressed the sustainability
trends and regulations for architectural paints concern-
ing concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
In addition, environmental certifications are also part of
the initiatives that encourage the paint supply chain to
organize itself aiming at sustainable activities. One of the
examples is what has been happening in Europe since the
creation of several certifications that endorse the sustain-
ability of products and services in the industry and assure
consumers that certain products are manufactured in com-
pliance with environmental standards.
According to Marco Aurélio Barboza, business director at
DuPont Brazil’s Titanium Dioxide group, the pressure from
society for sustainable products and process is now part of
the reality in the global economy and needs to be incorpo-
rated in to the industry’s growth plans. “You can’t think
about economic growth without taking social and environ-
mental concerns into consideration,” Barboza says.
Franco Faldini, marketing director for Latin America at Dow
Coating Materials, stresses the need for a collective effort
involving the entire value chain and the contribution provi-
ded by environmental certifications. “While being one of the
world’s top-five producers of paints and coatings, Brazil fa-
ces the challenge of promoting the sustainable development
of the industry and showing commitment to consumers,”
says Faldini, who adds that the forum was a very positive
initiative. “From where I stand, we achieved 100 percent of
our goal, which is to speak with the entire value chain, be-
cause it is this value chain that will mobilize the industry,”
he concludes.
