ABRAFATI HOLDS ANNUAL SUSTAINABILITY SEMINAR Abrafati’s Annual Sustainability Seminar, held on May 7 at Grand Mercure Ibirapuera, in São Paulo, discussed the Natio- nal Policy for Solid Waste (PNRS), which has drawn a lot of attention from the coatings industry over the past few years. During the seminar, attendees were also able to take a look through the industry’s lenses at sustainability as part of its strategy, based on a study being conducted with a view to anticipating the paths to follow on this front. Freddy Carrillo, chairman of the Board of Directors at Abrafati, pointed out in his opening speech that sustainability is amajor issue in the industry. “That’s why this forum has become part of our calendar, always addressing current topics of great re- levance through the lectures featured at this event. Over the past several years, sustainability has emerged as top priority in the paint and coatings industry. And we have made it our concern all the way, reassessing our initiatives and seeking to adjust them to the requirements we already have identified, as well as those we anticipate.” The high-end program was closely followed by more than 70 businesspeople engaged in the industry, making their morning rich in shared information and reflections of great import. Representative Arnaldo Jardim, who drafted the PNRS and is one of the country’s most respected congressmen, talked about the advances ushered in by this piece of legislation, as well as the challenges facing it. Max Silva, of Fundação Espaço Eco, provided an overview of themain points considered by thematerialitymateriality study of the coatings industry being conducted by Abrafati. Mario Hirose, head of the Sustainable Development depart- ment at the FIESP (São Paulo State Industry Federation), in- troduced the reverse logistics systemcreated by the entity for packaging materials, which is already up and running and had been adhered to by more than 700 businesses across Brazil. ENTITIES - SITIVESP HOLDS NEW BOARD INAUGURATION CEREMONY Sitivesp (short for Union of São Paulo State Paint and Coating Manufacturers) held an inaugural ceremony on May 14 for its new executive board at the headquarters of the São Paulo State Industry Federation (FIESP). The event was honored by the attendance of members, suppliers and partners. FIESP president Paulo Skaf made a point of congratulating the new board and invite the new chairman Douver Mar- tinho to take part in the federation’s board meetings and become one of its officers. “The offices and boards have their doors open for you. We have major challenges facing us and we need unity.” At an emotional point, Douver Martinho said that at the helm of Sitivesp, he will continue fighting on behalf of the paint and coatings industry because that is what he believes in and has worked at for more than 40 years. He pointed out that it was his hard work that led him to Sitivesp and ABRAFATI. “Being ethical is a matter of attitude. I’ll be at the helm at Sitivesp for the next three years, and that makes me really proud. I have tremendous respect for thework that has been done here over the years, which I have closely followed, and we’ll continue to evolve as we move forward.” The new chairman said in closing that developing the industry takes hardwork. “Only this way will we continue adding value to our members, being recognized by themas amodern union that meets and anticipates their needs and expectations, while being in tune with the ever-changing environment that characterizes the world today.”
