For conventional alkyd resins using standard low-solids, fatty-
-acidsoroil-basedtechnology, today’seconomyisputtingstrong
pressureonprices,evenwhereaperceivedrecovery involumes

nologydirectorforLatinAmericaatAllnexBrazil.“Andit’sexactly
throughuniquetechnologiesthatyoucanfindawayofadding
morevalueinthismarketsegment.Changingchemicalplatforms,
usingdifferent oils, having faster,more integratedproduction
processes inplaceand increasingsolidsareapproachestodeve-
lopmentandinnovationthatimprovenotonlyperformance,but
alsologisticsandprocesscosts.Inaddition,it’sworthstressingthat
shareofthischemistryintheLatinAmericanmarket,especially,is
ranging35to40percent.”

AtMuseudaCasaBrasileira,December06sawonemoreedition
ofCabotPlus, this timecelebrating thecompany’s40yearsof
activity. Itwas anevening full of cultural attractions andfine
diningatRestauranteSantinho, ledbythechefMorenaLeite(at
AvenidaBrigadeiroFariaLimano.2705,SãoPaulo,SãoPaulo).A
majorculturalattractionwasaperformancebytheyoungtenor
JeanWilliams,alongwithfiddlerRafaelAltroandastringquartet.
Thatgroup ispartoftheMostradeCordasDedilhadasprogram,
whichissponsoredbyCabot.JeanWilliamshasperformedatsuch
loftyconcerthallsasTeatroMunicipaldoRiodeJaneiro,SalaSão
Paulo,AllaScala, inMilan,andNewYork’sCarnegieHall,among
others.Forthefirstpartoftheirperformance,thegroupplayed
tunesbyrenownedBraziliancomposerslikePixinguinha,Cartola,
SérgioBitencourt,ChiquinhaGonzaga,andDilermandoReis.The
secondpartoftheconcertfeaturedtunesfromtheinternational
classics repertoire, suchasNessunDorma,OSoleMio, Con te
PartiromandGranada. In chargeof producing theeventwas
AmpliartDifusãoCultural.
Regional directorGuillermodel Castillowelcomed theguests
and talked about the importanceof the40-yearmilestone,
pointingoutthatCabotCorporationisconstantlyrethinkingand
innovatingwithaviewtoprovidingproductsandservicesthat
addvaluebyenhancingperformance invarious applications.
EduardoCordeiro,executivevicepresidentandpresidentforthe
Americas,andWendyPryceLewis,vicepresidentand regional
business director, PerformanceChemicalsAmericas, bothof
whomrepresentingCabotCorporation,cametoBraziltoshow
their support for theevent. “As the regional director of our

EVENTS -ABRAFATIHOLDSYEAR-ENDDINNER
December 07 saw theBrazilianAssociationof PaintManufacturers
(known for short inPortugueseasAbrafati) hold its year-dinner at
ClubeAtléticoMonteLíbano, inSãoPaulo,bringingtogetherpartners,
membersandpersonalitiesofthecoatings industry.
Ontheoccasion,AbrafatiexecutivepresidentDilsonFerreiracommen-
tedontheyear2016:“Thishasbeenatoughyear,filledwithexpecta-
tionsastowhatwasgoingtohappeninourpolitics,includingallofthe
uncertainties that culminated in the impeachment of thepresident.
Theeconomyhasbeenimpactedbyadeeprecession,making2016the
worstyear inthehistoryofnotthecoatings industry inBrazil,butalso
andcertainly inthoseofmanyothersectors.Thatwasaconsequence
of thepooradministrationwehad in theprecedingyearsand led to
remarkablynegativeresultsthroughout2016.Asaresult,alsoaffected
were themarketswe serve, suchas thebuildingand construction,
automotiveand infrastructure industries,whichhavedisplayed such
unfavorableresults.AndwhatAbrafatihasdoneduringthisyearwas
totryandcontributethroughourprograms, inconjunctionwithother
industryassociationsofthemanufacturingsector.We’vefoughtagainst
thedifficultiesencounteredandsoughttonegotiatewiththegovern-
mentwithaviewtocreatingthebestpossibleconditionsformitigating
thenegative impact.”
Ferreiraalsosharedhisforecastforthisyear:“Lookingat2017,westillsee
adifficultyearaheadofus,butweexpecttheeconomytostabilize,at
leasttosomeextent,reversingthefallinourGDPandresuminggrowth,
even ifonlymodestly.”
FreddyCarrillo,chairmanoftheAbrafatiManagementBoard,empha-
sized the importanceofexchanging informationonexperiencesand
situationsgoingfarbeyondtherealityanddifficultiesinthemarketplace.
“Wemustdosomethingtochangethefuture.We’vebeenthrougha
toughyear,whichinfactwasthethirdconsecutiveyearofdeclineinthe
paintandcoatingsindustry,whichisamajorcauseforconcernbecause
thathasastrongimpactthroughouttheindustry’ssupplychain.Forthis
reason,theworkwe’redoingrightnowisfocusedontryingtominimize
that impactandturnthingsaroundforgrowth intheyear2017.We’re
runningacampaignaimedatstimulatingtheconsumptionofourpaints
andcoatings,whileobviouslycapitalizingongovernmentprograms,
aswellasprogramsfromotherassociationsthatcanhelpusboostthe
coatingsmarket.”
During the event, Abrafati alsohonoredCarlos CelsoRusso, who
received the title“ABRAFATI Personality” forhis relevant role in the
developmentofthepaintandcoatings industry.
Thereupon,Abrafatiproceededtopresentthe17thAbrafatiCoatings
ScienceAwardstotheauthorsofthreestudiesthatstoodoutforboth
theirhightechnical levelandtheirconcernforsustainability.
PetrobrasDistribuidora(alsolocallyknownasBR)tooktheopportunity
tohonorthosepaintandcoatingsproducerswhohaveadheredtothe
Industry-specificQualityProgram (PSQ, the initials inPortuguese) for
DecorativeCoatings, reaffirmingBR’s support for initiatives thatwill
strengthentheindustryanditscommitmenttoexcellence.Altogether,
35companieshavesubscribedtotheprogramthusfar.Attheevent,
23ofthemwerehonored,and12aresettofollowsuitgoingforward.
