ofmarkets inBrazil,we’vepulledoffa 10-percentgrowth
rate for 2016. We attribute that success to the changes
wemade not only in our formulations, but also in our
sales andmarketing teams. For thenext fewyears,we’ll

thesamepath.We’vealsoseen rapidgrowth inour stan-
dard line, andwe’reworking towards achievinga similar
performancewith our premium products in the coming
years,”saysCacá.
PERSONALITY -AFAMILYSTORY
CMPpresidentattains50yearsofhiscareercelebratinga
successstory in thesteel can industry.
Atrajectoryspanning50yearsbeingtoldat justonecom-
pany. This sumsup the career of JoséVilleladeAndrade
Neto, president at Companhia Metalgráphica Paulista
(CMP), who joined the company in 1967 andhas helped
tomake ita leadingpaintcanmanufacturer inBrazil.“My
careerhasbeena lifetimeatCMP.Because it’safamily-run
business, Iwaspracticallybornandraised inthis industry,
where I startedoutearlyat 18,”he tells.
Having receivedadegree inEconomics in 1972 fromUni-
versidadedeSãoPaulo (USP), Villela takesprideand joy
in tellinghow it all happened at his family-run company.
“CMPwas founded in 1924bymygrandfatherLincolnde
Azevedo—thefatherofmymotherMariaReginaAzevedo
VilleladeAndrade—,who’ddecidedtomakehisowncan
forhisdairybusiness,especiallybuttercans. In1940myfa-
therJoséVilleladeAndradeJuniormarriedmymum,who
wasoneof theCMPheirs, andCMPwasnearlyapublicly
heldcompanyatthattime,witharound200shareholders.
Thereupon,mydadstartedbuyingsharesuntilhewound
upacquiringa 100-percent stake in thecompany.”
Villela says his father entered into a partnership with
the dairy company Vigor in 1960. “My dad was class
act. Hewas president of theNational Confederationof
Industry (CNI) andpresident emeritus at the SãoPaulo
State Industries Federation (FIESP), he contributed to
the trade learning servicesSesi andSenai, andhehad lotsof
knowledge and connections. He eventually offered Vigor a
20-percent stake inCMP. The resultingpartnership lasted 10
years, afterwhichperiodCMPbecame a 100-percent family-
-runbusiness.Mymother currently holds amajority stake in
our company, or80percent, and the remaining20percent is
mine,”Villelaconcludes.
EQUIPMENT - GRINDINGSYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY
TheGermangroupNeuman&Esser,whichboastsmore than
180yearsof existence, isengaged in thebusinessofbuilding
grindingandclassifyingsystems,particularlypendulum roller
mills. “Our impact classifiermills are extensively used in the
paintandcoatings industry,bysuppliersofsoftminerals,such
as talc, gypsum, calciumcarbonate, andalso in thecosmetic,
foodandchemical industries(pigments,resins,plastics,etc.),”
says salesengineerRoquedeMoraesMendesTorres.
Thecompany locallyprovidesfullcustomersupportasapoint
of difference, coveringeverything from sellingequipment to
providingsparepartsandtechnicalservicesdirectlyfromBelo
Horizonte,MinasGerais. “Wealsohaveawholedepartment
dedicated to research and development, whose efforts are
focusedonnewtechnologiesdesignedto improveprocesseffi-
cienciesandreducebothenergyconsumptionandproduction
costs. Inaddition,wehaveour Test Center inBeloHorizonte
equippedwithaPM00pendulumrollermill (laboratoryscale),
aswell asa lab inGermanyequippedwithan impactclassifier
grinder,where testsare runonvarious rawmaterials so that
we can assess productivity and determine themachine size
thatbest suitseachcustomer,”Torres remarks.
Neuman&Essermanufacturespendulum rollermills forgrin-
dingnon-metallicmineralsratedupto7Mohs inhardness,such
asbentonite,barite,phosphaticrock,fertilizersand limestone,
aswellas impactclassifiermills,allofwhichcandeliveroutputs
ranging from 17kilograms toasmuchas 10 tonsperhour, ty-
picallyusinga100to1200mesh, formanufacturersofpowder
coatingsandsuppliersofsoftminerals.“Thecoatings industry
ismostcertainlyoneofourmajornichemarkets,andwehave
several registeredpatents that helpus achieve leadership in
theglobalmarket.”
For the powder coatingsmarket, Neuman& Esser provides
impact rollermills,while itspendulumclassifiermillsareused
for grinding carbonates, which are rawmaterials required
for producing liquidpaints. “Wedevelop equipment for low
energy consumptionand for easy cleaningandmaintenance
withaviewtowidening itsavailabilityandminimizingclean-up
down times,”Torresconcludes.
