POLYURETHANERESINS - INCREASINGLYBETTERAND
MORERELIABLE
Themarket inpolyurethane resins is always growing and
displayinggreat potential for demand, especiallybecause
manufacturersmake it their business tomeet the needs
of the paint and coatings industry by ushering in novel
products,constanttechnological improvements,andmore
sustainablesolutions.
Thereisagreatwealthofsolutionsandvariedoptionsinraw
materialavailabletothepaint industry,enoughtomeetthe
customer-specificneedsof eachmanufacturer. The same
goes in themarket for polyurethane resins,wheremanu-
facturersprovide innumerabletechnologies inwaterborne,
solvent-borneorhigh-solidssystems.
According toAntonio Carlos Veronezi Filho, a chemist at
Coim,thevarietyofoptionsofferedbythecoatings industry
canreallybeoverwhelming.“The listofchoicesavailableto
endusersseemsendless,but it’snothingcomparedtothe
list of requirements that both suppliers of rawmaterials
andpaintcompaniesneed toconsider in formulating their
products. Performance, looks, protection, cost-benefit
ratiosandenvironmentalpreservationare justsomeofthe
considerationsfactoring in.Forendusers,thepolyurethane
technology isasolutionthataddressesallof them.”
Themost significant advances in polyurethane resins lie
inhigh-solids andwaterborne systems in viewof the sus-
tainability issue, according toMoritzWinterstein, headof
Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties at Covestro for Latin
America.“Otheradvantagesofthesesystems includehigh
productivity and easymaintenance. The use of polyurethane
resinsensuresanodorlessenvironmentattheconstructionsite
andshortermaintenancedowntimes,whileenabling insulation
exclusively intheareatobecoated,ratherthanallareas,as inthe
caseofahospital,forexample.Inaddition,ournewtechnologies
represent great opportunities for the new ‘green’ buildings.
Covestro has the first office building to be LEED-NC Platinum-
-certified in Latin America. Built using solutions ranging from
paintstowallandflooringcoatings,toadhesivesandto low-VOC
sealers, it’sthefirstbuilding inBrazil toreceivethetop-levelsus-
tainabilitycertification fornewofficebuildings.”
This is an industry segment where advances are constant in
termsofbothnewdevelopmentsand improvements inexisting
products,whichcreatemoreandmorespecificandsustainable
applicationpossibilities tomeet the strongdemand from the
entirepaintandcoatings industry, according toReginaKawai,
productstewardforEvonik’sCoatingAdditivesgroup.“There’s
good demand for polyurethane resins in the floor coatings
segment, due to theirflexibilityandweatherability, in the for-
mulation of wood varnishes because of their good adhesion
propertiesandtheircuringatroomtemperature, inautomotive
refinish coatings, as they featurehigh chemical strength, and
inautomotivecoatings ingeneral, because they result inhigh-
-performancefinishes.”
