INVESTMENTS -SIBELCOOPENSNEWPLANT INUPSTATESÃO
PAULO
Belgian-basedminingcompanySibelcohasannouncedtheopening
of itsnewplant inJarinu,upstateSãoPaulo.Theprojectwasbacked
byInvesteSãoPaulo,aninvestmentandexportpromotionagencyof
theSãoPaulostategovernment.
Resulting from investments to the tune of R$ 160million, the
company’sthirdBrazilianplantcoversatotalareaof255,000square
meters,withabuilt-upareaof7,300squaremeters.Convenientlyloca-
tednearmajorpaintmanufacturersandthecountry’smainhighways,
thenewplanthasgrinding,dryingandslurrypreparationoperations
forthepaintandcoatings industry.
Thenewplantisgoingtocontributetothecompany’sstrategyofposi-
tioningitselfasBrazil’scalciumcarbonatemarketleaderandreducing
importsofthatrawmaterialintothecountry.Ithasannualcapacityof
160,000tonsofslurryand35,000tonsofultrafinecalciumcarbonate.
OfallBrazilianpaintmanufacturersthatuseslurry intheirproduction
processes,90percentarealreadyonSibeco’slistofcustomers,accoun-
tingforapproximately65percentofthedomesticmarket,according
toLeonardoAlves,strategydirectoratSibelcoSouthAmerica.“The
Jarinuplant is oneof thegroup’smostmodernunits, aswell as a
worldbenchmark inqualityandsustainability.Usingstate-of-the-art
equipment, we addhomogeneity, efficiency andflexibility toour
productionprocess.Thisplant isgoing toenableus tobolster
our leadership in thecalciumcarbonatemarketby increasing
ourproductioncapacityby50percentcompared to theMogi
dasCruzesandSaltoplants,whileexpandingourmarketshare
thoughon-demandproductiontosupplyagroupofcustomers
thatneedourproducts,but insmallerquantitiescomparedto
thosedemandedbymajordomesticplayers,”hepointsout.
In theeyes of EdsonTeixeira,marketingmanager at Sibelco
SouthAmerica,despitethedownturnexperiencedoverthepast
twoyearsbythepaintandcoatings industry inBrazil,which is
theworld’s sixth largest, thecompanyhascarriedonwith its
plan to invest in the Jarinuplant because it is confident that
thesituationwillbe reversed in themid term. “Ourprospects
for 2017 are already positive, althoughnot so substantial in
figures.Withourcapabilityofservingnewcustomersthrough
on-demandproduction, Ibelievewe’reontracktoexperience
muchmoregrowth.”

TheUnionofSãoPauloStatePaintandCoatingManufacturers
(knownforshort inPortugueseasSitivesp)presentedtheirSu-
pplieroftheYearAwardsonNovember24,duringtheentity’s
traditionalyear-endmeetingattheattheFIESP(SãoPauloState
IndustriesFederation)building inSãoPaulo.
SitivesppresidentNarcisoMoreiraPretoopenedtheceremony
bythankingallofthosepresentforattending.“We’vecometo
theendof ayear thathasbeen reallydifficult, butwoundup
strengtheningourbusinesses.Afterallthatwe’vebeenthrough,
beingabletobeherepresentingourSupplieroftheYearAwards
isaveryspecialthing.Tous,atSitivesp,realizinghowimportant
theseawardshavebecometotheindustryisacauseforpride,as
ourmission isto integrateall links inthesupplychain.Andwith
thesupport fromallourmembersand theFIESP,we’regoing
tofindwaysofrecoveringthecountry’seconomy.”
FIESPpresidentPauloSkafwasunable toattend, butmakea
pointofdroppingbyattheunion’sheadquarterstocommend
theboard. During thepresentation ceremony, hewas repre-
sentedbyPauloHenriqueSchoueri, incumbentdirectorofthe
ServiceCenter andUnionDepartment,whoemphasized the
workdonebytheentity.“Sitivesp isarolemodel,andwe learn
a lotfromyou.Theseawardsareanexamplewhichshouldbe
followedbyotherentities.”
Schoueri embracedpresidentPauloSkaf’soptimismand said
that the road“isnotperfectlypaved,but ismuchbetter than
before.”Hesaidthattheyneedtobestrongandwellprepared.
